Response-Ability Empathy in Action
Project Description:
People do not have the opportunity to choose their country of origin. For someone fortunate enough to have been born in a developed and democratic nation, it becomes easy to take concepts such as freedoms and rights for granted. However, in many nations throughout the world conflict and crisis are everyday occurrences that result in human beings fleeing their homelands. Throughout this project students will have an opportunity to intimately learn about the refugee experience and to demonstrate empathy in action in a variety of ways.

Essential Questions:
- What does it mean to be a refugee? How can we capture that meaning in a portrait?
- What challenges do refugees face as they flee their country of origin? What challenges do refugees face upon arrival in the United States? What was a defining moment for that individual? What was a bright spot, something that helped the refugee be resilient?
- In what ways can US citizens respond to the needs of refugees living in/near their community?
- Connection to The Arts
1. Be able to explain the meaning behind your work and all of the decisions that you made.
2. Describe your work using elements and principles of art.
3. What questions might the audience have when looking at your work?

Project Description:
Each student will create an Art Portfolio during their semester in Integrated Art/Multi media III. Portfolios are designed to help students interested in going to art school get a portfolio started. However, portfolios are also designed to benefit students who are not going in to an art related field after high school. Students will have the option to choose their theme and their mediums so that the work may benefit every student and their interests.
Essential Questions:
How do the Elements and Principles of Design encourage a stronger understanding of our visual world?
Why is important to understand the arts?
What did you learn about yourself in the creation of a portfolio?

Molecular Machines Project
A visual investigation of intracellular protein macromolecules
Project Description:
In Biology class, you will be studying the functions and structures of proteins. Proteins perform many of the vital functions in your body. You will be looking at a 3D visualization program called Chimera to choose your protein. In Art, we will be looking at an artist named David Goodsell, also the author of The Machinery of Life. As we look at his work, we will analyze the use of composition, color, symmetry & asymmetry, line, texture, balance and pattern. Then we will create our own molecular machine paintings.
Essential Questions:
-How are we assembled?
-How can we analyze elements of art to determine an individual's visual attraction?
-What elements of design are you particularly drawn to and why?
-What principles of design are you drawn to and why?
-What makes and interesting composition in a work of art?
*Congratulations to Reagan for winning 3rd place in the K-12 Science Art Challenge!: http://bioeasi.org/
